Senior Consultant Specialising in Exposure to Fibres

Alan’s specialist field is Occupational Hygiene Research and Consultancy, and in particular the health risks associated with asbestos.  Alan has a BSc (Hons) in Physics and an MPhil and PhD in Engineering.  He has worked in health and safety for 30 years, and has specialised in aspects relating to the risks from exposure to asbestos and other fibres.  Until recently, he was the Head of Fibres and Physics Section at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) and is currently a Senior Consultant working in the IOM’s Strategic Consulting Division. 

Alan provides advice on the likely health risks from asbestos, frequently with a retrospective estimation of the likely exposure, He has led a European collaborative project on a new sampling technique for collecting samples for measurement of asbestos concentrations, and is secretary to an HSE Committee on Fibre Measurement, and recently led an IOM team in drafting a European guide on best practice to prevent or minimise exposure to asbestos.  Alan has published over 100 papers and reports, the majority of them relating to asbestos and other fibres.
