Methods for the measurement and counting of asbestos and other fibres

Following research into measuring methods, IOM developed the Walton-Beckett microscope eyepiece graticule for counting asbestos and other fibres in 1977. This optical device was the first of its kind designed specifically to improve the reliability of fibre counting, by defining the counting area and showing a scale to assess the length of fibres.

This provided the basis to establish an accurate and repeatable method for measuring fibre concentrations, now adopted throughout the world.
