Rebecca Canham joins ‘Health & Safety Uncut’: Exploring the Link Between Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Sharing a scientific perspective on the link between physical and mental wellbeing Rebecca Canham, IOM principal scientist and chartered Health Psychologist Spoke with British Safety Council’s Head of Impact and Influencing, Stephen Cooke, on BSC’s podcast ‘Health & Safety Uncut’.  

During the podcast Rebecca shares her expert knowledge and personal experience of the link between physical and mental wellbeing. One point of discussion is the reasons why this important issue demands consideration in the workplace. Another focus is on the factors that contribute to good physical and mental health. The conversation also highlights employers’ legal obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Equality Act to protect and support their workforce. Additionally, Rebecca and Stephen explore important themes around physical and mental wellbeing from the joint work undertaken between BSC and IOM. 

Rebecca advocates for holistic consideration of worker wellness to promote and protect the workers ‘whole self’ encompassing integration of both physical and mental wellbeing. She emphasises a proactive approach whereby employers risk assess physical and mental health hazards to their workers to inform preventative action. Roles and responsibilities are also discussed, with an acknowledgement that everyone has a role to play (organisations themselves, line managers and individual workers).
