Technician
The Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) is a major independent centre of scientific excellence in the fields of occupational and environmental health, hygiene and safety. We are looking to recruit a Technician to join our Analytical Division.
The post holder will work within the mineralogy section of the IOM lab and undertake analysis for asbestos in bulk material and soils.
Specific duties include:
- Analysing asbestos in bulk materials and soils
- Reporting
- Conforming with the requirements of our ISO17025 accreditation
- Other adhoc duties as required
Applicants must hold a P401 qualification.

Asbestos Auditor
Regional
IOM is seeking an experienced Asbestos Analyst / Surveyor with current auditing experience to the ISO 17025, ISO 17020 and UKAS standards to undertake Quality system and site based audits across all IOM offices and semi-permanent sites. The role is not base specific, therefore, the candidate could work from any of the 4 IOM offices. The successful candidate will work within the IOM's UKAS accreditation for sampling and analysis.
Specific duties would involve:
- Planning audits to ensure compliance with the IOM Quality Management System
- Planning and carrying out audits on site for all IOM asbestos analysts and surveyors
- Undertaking internal quality system audits in the regional offices
- Undertaking re-inspection surveys across all 4 offices
The post holder must have extensive experience in asbestos site and consultancy work as well as previous asbestos auditing experience, it is preferable that the successful candidate holds the Certificate of Competency in Asbestos (CoCA).
The post will involve considerable travelling, some weekend working and other unsocial hours as required from time to time.
A current clean driving licence is essential.
Database Analyst & Programmer
Edinburgh
The IOM are seeking to recruit a Database Analyst & Programmer to join our Information Systems Division.
Working primarily as a data manager and developer you will be part of a small team providing Information Systems to the operational divisions. You will work on the development and support of in-house systems and applications ranging from simple ad-hoc solutions to larger multi-user systems for clients, both for consulting and research purposes.
You will have substantial experience of analysis, design and programming in general and especially in recent Microsoft products, principally Access, SQL Server, .Net framework, vb.net and asp.net.
Experience of working in a research or similar multidisciplinary environment, with the ability to contribute to project proposals, design and reporting is required. In addition experience of information management and data protection policies and procedures, and the aptitude to contribute to the wider duties of the ICT team will be advantageous.
You will be able to work well as part of a team but also need the ability to operate effectively under your own initiative.

Trainee Asbestos Surveyors and Analysts
(Opportunities in London and Stafford)
The IOM is seeking to recruit Trainee Asbestos Analysts and Surveyors to join our growing and dynamic Asbestos Services Division.
Asbestos Services provide a wide range of services to local and national clients both in the public and private sector. We have UKAS accreditation in our offices and laboratory, covering sampling, surveys, fibre counting, four stage clearances and asbestos analysis.
Ideally we are looking for candidates who can demonstrate enthusiasm and confidence to work with clients and colleagues at all levels, enjoy working as part of a team and possess excellent numerical and written communication skills.
Based in either London or Stafford you will undertake comprehensive in-house training combined with hands on practical site experience working under the supervision of our Lead Analysts and Surveyors. You will also work towards attaining the BOHS P402, P403 and P404 qualifications.
Training will take place across our regional offices and at our Head Office in Edinburgh, therefore, you must be willing to be flexible and travel when required. A full driving licence is essential.

Asbestos Surveyor/Analysts Positions

Do you have minimum P402 and S301 qualifications?

Do you have the confidence and ability to work independently or within a Team?
We are looking to recruit experienced individuals to join our Asbestos Division based throughout the UK.
These roles involve working to our Quality Management Systems and UKAS accreditation within small project teams of asbestos site analysts and surveyors and servicing a range of local and national clients in both the public and private sector.
You will be experienced in one or more of the following areas of work:
- Undertaking building surveys and bulk sampling
- Carrying out asbestos monitoring and clearances
- Preparing accurate reports of your work in standard formats.
