OUR BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Margaret Burns CBE

Chair

Margaret joined IOM's Board as Governor in 2010, and has been Chair since 2015.  She  has wide experience of roles promoting the public and consumer interest.  From 2007 to 2015 she served as Chair of NHS Health Scotland, Scotland's national agency for tackling health inequalities. She was previously Legal Advisory Officer to the Scottish Consumer Council, a Consultant with the Consumers' Association and a member of the Scottish Consumer Council.

Margaret was a member of the Health and Safety Commission from 1998 to 2007, chairing the Commission's Rail Industry Advisory Committee which included representatives of all parts of the rail industry and which advised the Commission on rail safety policy. She was also a member of the Committee on Radioiactive Waste Management from 2007 to 2013.

Prof Susan Deacon

Governor

Susan joined IOM's Board as Governor in 2013. Susan is also currently Chair of the Institute of Directors Scotland and Assistant Principal of External Relations at the University of Edinburgh as well as holding Non-Executive Director roles at Scottish Power and Lothian Buses. Susan is a former MSP and Scottish Minister for Health and Community Care.

Alastair Atkinson

Governor

Alastair joined IOM as Governor in 2014. He is CEO of DySIS Medical, a Scottish-based medical diagnostics company. He is a former Director of Optos and is an Honorary Assistant Professor at Heriot Watt University.

Stephen Hutt

Governor

Stephen joined IOM as Governor in 2014. Stephen is a former Business Finance Director of Kerry Ingredients and former Chief Executive of The Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland. Stephen is currently CFO of Green Highland Renewables Ltd.

Ray Jones

Governor

Ray joined IOM as Governor in 2014 and has held a succession of senior positions in the agribusiness sector and is currently Chairman of Scotland Food and Drink, and a Director of SAOS (Scottish Agricultural Organisations Society).

      

Liz Mallinson

Governor

Liz Mallinson joined as Governor at IOM in 2014. Liz is currently Commercial Director – Next Generation Access Scotland for BT Group.  Liz is a Member of the BT Scotland Board. She previously held senior positions at Scottish Enterprise, Project Scotland and NHS24.

Prof Rob Aitken

CEO

Rob has been at IOM for over 40 years and a member of the Board of Management since 2002 and assumed the role of CEO in November 2016. Rob was instrumental in establishing our successful Strategic Consulting division and in the set-up of our SAFENANO business in 2006. In 2012 Rob then relocated to Singapore to set-up our first overseas business as Managing Director of IOM Singapore before returning to the UK in late 2016 as CEO.

Chris Owens

Director of Central Services and Finance

Chris joined IOM in 2001 and has been a member of the Board of Management since 2005. Chris is responsible for the delivery of central support services including HR, finance, secretarial services, ICT, marketing, information governance, quality, environmental compliance, facilities, fleet, insurance & risk management, pensions and legal issues. Chris is also IOM’s Company Secretary. Chris trained with KPMG and is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Jerry Slann

Director of Occupational Hygiene

Jerry has a long standing career in Occupational Hygiene and joined IOM in 2002, where he heads up the UK delivery of Occupational Hygiene services and as a Hospital Ventilation Authorising Engineer, Jerry has a prominent role in managing this aspect of our business. 

Grant Law

Marketing Director

Grant joined IOM in 2012. Prior to that and over a 30 year career Grant has held senior marketing roles spanning the marketing of Utilities, Food and Drink, Leisure Services, Healthcare, IT and Electronics as well as establishing one of Scotland's leading strategic marketing consultancies.

Grant is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and a Fellow of the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing.

Dr Steve Hankin

Director of Analytical Services

Steve joined IOM in 2007 and led the development of our safety of nanomaterials Centre of Excellence (SAFENANO).  In 2015 Steve became Director of our Analytical Division, incorporating SAFENANO with Laboratory Services in chemistry, mineralogy and PPE testing.  Steve is a Chartered Chemist and previously held positions at the National Research Council of Canada, University of Glasgow and Health Protection Scotland. 

 

Dr Sotiris Vardoulakis

Research Director

Sotiris joined IOM as Director of Research in 2017. A physicist with a background in exposure science, he has over 20 years’ experience in air pollution, climate change and environmental health research, policy and practice. He held senior positions at Public Health England, and previous appointments at the Australian National University, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Birmingham University, University of Aveiro (Portugal), Lewes District Council (UK), and INERIS institute (France). He has served several scientific and public health advisory committees, and currently co-chairs the Healthy-Polis International Consortium for Urban Environmental Health & Sustainability.
