Acids

Acids are used every day across industries including pharmaceuticals, food production, chemical manufacturing, healthcare and education.

Depending on the substance and how it is used, exposure to acid vapours, mists or aerosols can cause:

  • Burns to the skin and eyes
  • Irritation and damage to the respiratory system
  • Corrosion of equipment and facilities
  • Serious wider health effects

Hydrofluoric acid requires particular care because exposure can cause severe and potentially delayed health effects.

IOM can analyse a range of acids using ion chromatography, including hydrofluoric, hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric and nitric acids.

Chlorine and bromine

Chlorine is a toxic, corrosive gas used in disinfection, water treatment, cleaning products and chemical manufacturing. Exposure can cause severe irritation and burns to the eyes, skin and respiratory system.

Bromine is a corrosive liquid that readily produces vapour at room temperature. It and its compounds are used in applications including flame retardants, drilling fluids, fumigants and pesticides. High exposure can cause serious harm.

Ozone

Ozone is a highly reactive gas that may be generated or used in workplace processes and equipment.

Exposure can occur unexpectedly if equipment leaks, processes are not enclosed or ventilation is inadequate. Breathing ozone can irritate and inflame the respiratory system and may aggravate asthma.
