Our Story

More than five decades of science, expertise and practical action

IOM’s roots go back to pioneering research into the health of coal workers. Since then, our work has evolved to address changing workplace and environmental risks, while maintaining the same core purpose: using evidence to understand risk, protect health and improve working environments.

Where our story began

Research into respiratory disease among coal miners began in the 1950s. This pioneering work into dust exposure and lung disease laid the foundations for what would become IOM.
