Manage Workplace Vibration

IOM assesses hand-arm and whole-body vibration exposure, identifies higher-risk activities and recommends practical controls to protect employees and strengthen compliance.

Service overview

Act before vibration causes lasting harm

Regular exposure to vibration from powered tools, machinery and workplace vehicles can cause serious and permanent health problems.

Hand-arm vibration can damage nerves, blood vessels and joints. Whole-body vibration may contribute to back pain and other musculoskeletal problems. These conditions often develop gradually, making early assessment and effective control essential.

Poorly managed exposure can also lead to sickness absence, reduced productivity, compensation claims and enforcement action.

When this service may be needed

  • Employees regularly use powered hand tools or vibrating equipment
  • Tools, vehicles, tasks or working patterns have changed
  • You need to understand exposure levels or check that existing controls are effective

Practical support

How IOM can help

IOM assesses the tools, vehicles, tasks and working patterns that contribute to vibration exposure. We measure or calculate employee exposure and compare it with the Exposure Action Values and Exposure Limit Values set by the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.

Our assessment helps you understand:

  • Who may be at risk
  • Which tools or activities create the most exposure
  • Whether exposure requires further action
  • Whether existing controls are effective
  • Where health surveillance may be needed

From evidence to action

Turning evidence into action

We provide practical recommendations that reflect how your organisation operates. These may include selecting lower-vibration equipment, improving maintenance, changing working methods and managing exposure time.

We can also help you develop policies, procedures and training that support consistent vibration risk management.
