Paul Smith

Senior Occupational Hygienist

Paul is a Chartered Member of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene within the British Occupational Hygiene Society.  He started his career as an Environmental Health Officer where he worked initially for three local authorities in the Midlands gaining experience in health and safety enforcement, as well as food hygiene, infectious diseases and other public health issues. He then became a Regulatory Inspector for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) where he gained extensive experience across a range of diverse industries.

Paul latterly became a Specialist Occupational Hygiene Inspector for HSE, a role which provided him opportunities to better understand exposure and the required control measures across the breadth of the work as required in that regulatory context. He has wide-ranging experience across all areas of occupational hygiene and the assessment, monitoring/surveillance, and control measures of chemical and biological hazards exposure as they relate to health. His roles included technical input into development of guidance - both internally for inspectors and externally for industry.

Paul has also conceived and managed specific research topic areas, such as metalworking fluids, isocyanates and surface engineering in conjunction with HSE's Science and Research Centre in Buxton. Paul has experience of typical workplace exposures and application of the concepts of reasonable practicability and as low as is reasonably practicable within the UK health and safety legislative framework. Paul has extensive experience of presenting HSE prosecutions at Magistrates Court as well as appearing as a witness in Coroner's Court.

• Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hygiene (University of Manchester)
• Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (University of Aston)
• NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
• Diploma in Environmental Health
