The TEMPEST Excel Implementation

The publicly available MS Excel implementation of TEMPEST.

To allow flexibility in the early stages of development Excel was used by the project team to gather and manipulate the data for TEMPEST. Later the agreed matrix data was transferred into an Access database to allow the use of more rigid definitions and structures on the data, with better defined coding schemes and lookup lists, improved querying and sorting facilities. It also allowed the implementation of a basic user menu so that others could more easily get started with retrieving TEMPEST data. The Access implementation is available here.

However the more basic Excel version of the matrix data is also made available and is described below.

The data and programs (queries, forms, formulae) in TEMPEST are not read only or otherwise "locked-down". To have the demonstrations and illustrations operate correctly you should take care in the use of the TEMPEST data, ensuring you don't alter  existing data which is provided “as is” at the time of your download. Any alterations to data or programs as supplied may cause the database to stop operating correctly. We can neither guarantee nor warrant in any way the data provided or the results produced through the use of the public versions of TEMPEST, and your use of TEMPEST is strictly at your own risk.

The TEMPEST Excel workbook contains the main TEMPEST spreadsheet, with some accessory worksheets that define and describe the data and its values. The worksheets can be queried and manipulated directly.  Users are warned not to accidentally alter the supplied data.

The main worksheets are:

If required, users can produce subsets of data by filtering on the columns of the sheet (ie in TempestEraByRow or TempestEraByCol). Auto filters are set up on each column of these worksheets. Use of this facility is illustrated below. Click on screenshots for an enlarged image.
