OVERVIEW

Sustainable work (or good work) is work that sustains and engages you throughout an extended working life.  Keeping people in good health and engaged in work throughout working life is great for business.   Through demographic change and government policy, in the last ten years there has been a push for people to work longer.  By extending working lives, we need to understand vulnerabilities in the working population better, through age-related change and health changes; but also to understand the varied experience that people bring to work.  The aim of Ergonomics and associated disciplines is to design work to fit the worker both physically and mentally.

We do this is by evaluation of the physical and psychosocial work environment.  Identifying where there is a mis-match between the worker and the work and enable cost-effective interventions or adjustments to enable retention of workers.  Other pre-collected data sources, including sickness absence or injury data, can also give us information on the bigger picture in your workplace.

Objectives

  • Consider the impacts of demographic change on the workforce
  • Understand the possible impacts of age-related change and why older and younger workers are considered more vulnerable.
  • Introduce the concepts around sustainable work and Age Management
