IOM and SOM Series of Training Courses: Asbestos Awareness Training
Asbestos has been used for decades as an inexpensive industrial material with properties such as high tensile strength, heat resistance, incombustibility and chemical resistance to chemical attack. It has been recognised for more than 50 years that exposure to asbestos can cause serious diseases including cancer and asbestosis.
Use of asbestos is now banned in most countries but it is still produced and used in some countries. However, even where use is not allowed, asbestos can still be present in buildings, industrial plants, ships. etc. Those considered most at risk now are workers who may disturb asbestos materials during repair, maintenance and refurbishment work. It is therefore important that the dangers of exposure to airborne asbestos are understood by all those who may come in contact with it, and those who manage such work, with systems in place to protect themselves and others.
Attendees will understand the health hazards of exposure to asbestos, how exposure can occur and how these risks can be managed. With asbestos awareness provided, attendees will be equipped with the basic knowledge and considerations for safe planning of work.
Attendees will learn the following:
- Nature of Asbestos, Sources Type and Uses
- Typical Uses of Asbestos Containing Materials in Buildings
- Asbestos Related Health Effects and Diseases
- Legal Requirements to Manage Asbestos Containing Materials
- Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
- Management of Asbestos Containing Materials
- Management of Asbestos Procedures
Attendees will be awarded a certificate of attendance on completion.
