OVERVIEW

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 require employers to identify the hazards and assess the risks involved in the use of hazardous substances within the workplace.  Any potential exposure of persons to hazardous substances must be controlled.

Although the assessments are similar to other risk assessments they do require an understanding of chemicals, how these may enter the body and the potential effects of exposure.  The assessments must take account for all hazardous materials, both introduced into and generated from a process, including aspects of transport, storage and disposal.  This requires an understanding of the information provided in safety data sheets (SDS) and of exposure limits.

A systematic approach to carrying out the assessments will ensure that all aspects of exposure are identified and the implementation of effective control measures.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the COSHH Assessor Training course is to provided attendees with an understanding of the COSHH Regulations and their implications; enabling them to practically apply the requirements within the workplace.  The course provides practical guidance on how to interpret information from SDSs, consideration of routes of exposure, use of control measures and assessment of actual exposures.

The course also addresses consideration of the need for monitoring of exposure, health surveillance and the information and training which should be provided to employees.
