With the increasing development of brownfield sites the discovery of asbestos as a contaminant is presenting a real risk to developers and their contractors.

This is a potential concern for workers involved in the development of brownfield and greenfield sites from site investigation, demolition,  land remediation through to construction and development. Many such sites are public thoroughfares, or used as recreational areas, and these uses must also be considered with regard to risk of exposure.

Every employer must make sure that anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervises those employees, is provided with the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others.

It is therefore essential that those who work on/manage work on/visit potentially contaminated sites to understand and identify ACMs within made ground/ soils/demolition arisings/aggregates. This will allow them to make informed decisions regarding safe systems of work and how to protect themselves and others from exposure to asbestos.

This course will support developers and associated employers to meet their legal obligations to inform their staff of risks, and of the controls required to reduce the risks, associated with disturbing asbestos containing materials during ground works. Those affected must be trained to understand the hazards and risks associated with contaminated land, made ground and aggregates in compliance with the Control of Asbetsos Regulations 2012.

Attendees will understand more about asbestos awareness and how to adequately prepare for working at a location where ACMs may be present within the ground or soils.

The 1/2 day course will cover; what types and what forms of ACMs are found on UK brownfield sites, the difficulties in identifying these materials, control measures, practical examples to help identify ACMs within the ground, safe systems of work, risk assessments and legislation.
