Simple statistical test for compliance of fiber counts with hygiene standard (Letter)

A simple method is suggested for comparing fiber count data with a selected but variable hygiene standard, so as to determine whether or not a workplace is in compliance with that standard. The only computations needed are the basic calculations of fiber count and examined air volume. In particular, there is no need for logarithmic transformations or calculations of variance. The test is slightly conservative (i.e., errs on the side of increased safety) under the mathematical model in which fibers are assumed to be random line segments.
