Pneumoconiosis Field Research: Environmental conditions at Lady Victoria Colliery, 1977/78

This report tabulates respirable dust concentrations and compositions at Lady Victoria Colliery for the period April 1977 – March 1978.Information regarding seams worked, outputs, methods of working, explosives used, dust suppression, manpower and mean travelling time to faces, together with associated dust concentrations is presented in a series of face charts. At Lady Victoria Colliery the mean coalface respirable dust concentration was 2.2 mg/m3. The mean ash content of respirable dust was 42. 1 per cent and the mean quartz content was 9.9 per cent (23.7 per cent of the ash) representing a quartz concentration of 0.22 mg/m3.Face total dust concentrations are tabulated and were 9. 0 times as high as the respirable concentrations.Nitrous fume sampling is described and the results obtained are discussed; all observed values were low.
