Pneumoconiosis Field Research: Environmental conditions at Deep Navigation Colliery 1977-1980

This report tabulates dust concentrations and compositions at Deep Navigation Colliery for the period April 1977 to March 1980. Information regarding seams worked, outputs, methods of working, dust suppression and manpower, together with associated dust concentrations, is presented in a series of face charts. Total dust measurements are also presented. At Deep Navigation Colliery the coalface mean respirable dust concentration was 3.1 mg/nH for 1977t 3.7 mg/m3 for 1978 and 5.9 mg/nr for 1979. The mean ash and quartz concentrations were 1.03 mg/m3 and 0.13 mg/m3 respectively (i.e. 24.5% Ash and 3.0% Quartz) for the three year period. The sampling of nitrous fume is described and the results discussed. Other investigational work carried out is also presented.
