Physiological and psychological effects on man of small ions in the atmosphere

A review of the published literature on the many effects attributed to small ions in the atmosphere has been carried out. The findings suggest that positive ions do have adverse effects on the respiratory tract, possibly mediated via 5-hydroxytryptamine. Little controlled experimental evidence was found to support reports of more general physiological effects or of psychological effects including behavioural responses or performance changes.
