Occupational Health
The IOM offers a high quality occupational health service to employers in a broad spectrum of employment sectors. We tailor our approach to the specific needs of each individual client, and provide a highly personalised service in the belief that a close working relationship between employer and service provider is in everybody's best interests. We offer all mainstream occupational health services, from routine screening through to policy work and strategic advice.
Our in-house clinical team is led by an accredited specialist in occupational medicine, and is augmented by a network of associate clinicians, thus enabling us to provide a UK-wide service from our base in West London. All our clinicians work to the IOM's Quality Management System, developed according to Faculty of Occupational Medicine guidelines. This system has been audited by Constructing Better Health and by Crossrail, and IOM is an approved provider to both organisations.
Our occupational health services include:
- Pre-employment assessments
- Whether your workers are required by law or by regulation to be assessed before starting work, or whether you simply want to make sure that you can safely place workers in an environment that is suitable to them, our pre-placement assessments can help. Whether by questionnaire or face-to-face assessment, we can bring to your attention potential issues so that you can consider appropriate adjustments to help reduce the risk of health and safety issues developing over time.
- Fitness for work assessments
- In addition to providing a service to managers who are concerned about sickness absence amongst individual employees, we can also provide an equally personalised and supportive case referral service for managers concerned about an employee's fitness for work. For example, if you are concerned about an employee's performance we can help you exclude the possibility of a health issue that could be impacting on their work capacity. Where an employee's effective conduct of their duties is important for the safety of other's our opinion on fitness for safety critical work can contribute to the safe working of the wider workforce.
- Functional capacity assessments
- Sickness absence case management support
- IOM Occupational Health prides itself on providing a supportive framework in the delivery of a referral service for managers. If you have a case where health and work issues are causing or likely to cause sickness absence, then IOM's occupational health assessment and report service will help you understand the medical situation. We work hard to provide a personalised service; where businesses wish to build up a relationship with their medical advisers; where access to help is only a phone call away and where our clinical staff are happy to discuss the value of making a referral where it is unclear and where providing any necessary clarification on our written reports is all part of the service.
- Rehabilitation advice
- Disability advice
- Night worker assessments
- Occupational health needs assessments
- If you are unsure about what occupational health services would benefit your business, then IOM is here to provide that advice. We can arrange for an accredited specialist in occupational medicine to talk to you about your business and if necessary visit your premises and carry out a needs assessment. IOM has a specialist occupational hygiene consultancy so, if you are worried about workplace exposures then monitoring and measure of such exposures can be incorporated into the assessment of your organisations occupational health needs. Once we have produced a report for you, outlining your occupational health needs, we can help you source your requirements, either directly through our range of services or we can provide you with assistance in selecting the range of services you need from the wider marketplace.

- Occupational health strategy and policy advice
- Businesses need to rest easily that they can comply with health and safety legislation and meet their obligations of duty of care to their employees. As a business you will want to be supportive and be fair and equitable to your staff. Also you will want to be able to manage your costs effectively and take fair and justifiable action when health and work issues present themselves. If you need assistance in setting up an occupational health service, in understanding how a service might deliver for you or you want to engage an experienced occupational physician to assist you in meeting the ongoing needs of your business in the arena of health and safety, then IOM can provide that assistance
- Reviews of specific health hazards and work practices
- Occupational health training
- IOM can help you cut the cost of health surveillance by helping you train your own staff to carry out structured questionnaire-based checks on workers who are potentially exposed to health hazards in the workplace. These do not replace the need for medical assessments done by clinically trained staff, but, incorporated within a properly structured programme, some interim assessments can be done by appropriately trained responsible persons.
- IOM can also provide training and support for line managers, HR and Health & Safety staff within your business who may want to know how best to use occupational health services, how to set up a health surveillance programme or how to go about implementing occupational health advice. Tell us what your needs are and we will respond with tailored solutions.
- Medico-legal advice and report preparation
- Ill-health Retirement and Pensions Advice
- IOM can provide specialist occupational physician advice to help you manage those cases where ill health retirement is being considered or where an independent, qualified medical opinion is required to determine eligibility for retirement under the rules of the scheme in question. Please contact us so we can explain how we will guide you through the process.
- Stress and well-being at work
- IOM can help you tackle stress in the workplace by helping you with an analysis of what stress means for your organisation and for your employees. To do this we need to have some understanding of your business and engage with other stakeholders from within your business. Contact us to discuss how we would approach assessing your needs.
