REFNANO final report officially published 20/09/2007

REFNANO

'REFNANO: Reference materials for engineered nanoparticle toxicology and metrology' has been published on the DEFRA website. The project team, led by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, submitted their final report to DEFRA at the end of August 2007. The report represents the official response to DEFRA’s call for 'prioritisation of reference materials for engineered nanoparticle toxicology and metrology'.

REFNANO provides a priority list of candidates and development schedule for their inclusion in a set of reference materials to support measurement, toxicology and risk assessment of engineered nanoparticles in the UK. The project outputs were based on informed discussions and opinion-gathering activities with expert representatives from the toxicology, metrology and nanomaterials producer / user communities that took place throughout 2007.

The REFNANO report also identifies a series of requirements for the further development and promulgation of reference materials for nanoparticles, grouped according to the following themes:

  • Existing reference & test materials;
  • New reference & test materials;
  • Measurement techniques;
  • Guidance;
  • Strategic developments.
  • The recommendations put forward by REFNANO's authors within the report and the associated proposed requirements, are offered for consideration by other initiatives considering the development of reference materials, including on-going UK Government, OECD and international projects.

    SAFENANO provided exclusive coverage of REFNANO during its development and implementation (follow the links to view our Blogs and News Items). We welcome this report as an invaluable step towards regulation and standardisation of nanomaterial production.
