Northern Ireland goes smoke free
On the 30th April 2007 Northern Ireland will ban smoking in enclosed public places, including indoor workplaces and some vehicles. This is a very important change and the Health Promotion Agency of Northern Ireland (HPA) is running two research projects to find out about changes in smoking behaviour in the population as a consequence of the ban.
IOM and the University of Aberdeen are helping HPA with a study of non-smoking adults and smoke exposure in their homes. Over the two months before the ban we will collect more than 500 questionnaires from a representative sample of non-smokers living with one or more smokers, and obtain measurements of airborne nicotine in the homes of 100 of them. This information will set a baseline that will be used to judge the effect of the ban on non-smokers.
