HSE have updated advice about hand-arm vibration
More than five million workers are exposed to hand-arm vibration in the workplace. The causes of this vibration include chainsaws, mowers, hammer drills, grinders, sanders and other hand-held power tools. About 40% of exposed workers may suffer work-related ill-health.
The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations are designed to protect workers from such risks. There are a number of simple steps that you can take to help minimize risks. For example, good tool maintenance, automation of the process and reduced time working with power tools. However, the best approach is usually to look for an alternative work method that eliminates or reduces exposure to vibration.
HSE have recently updated their advice on hand-arm vibration, which includes practical examples of how companies have controlled exposure. Look at http://www.hse.gov.uk/vibration/hav/index.htm for more information.
