Analytical support for dust monitoring
Dust is about to re-emerge on the occupational health agenda as an issue in 21st century workplaces. The harmful effects of workplace exposure to dust have been known for decades. Dust-exposed workers are at increased risk of developing bronchitis, emphysema and other serious respiratory illnesses. These diseases may develop even where the materials being handled are considered to be of relatively low toxicity. In the wider environment, exposure to low concentrations to airborne particles is associated with increased risks for cardiovascular and respiratory illness and a reduction in life expectancy. In some workplaces airborne dust may be associated with additional hazards such cancer or occupational asthma.
The IOM lab will provide you with advice on sampling, an efficient analytical service for the gravimetric analysis of dusts, including the supply of pre-weighted filters and we can analyse dust for a wide range of substances that may be of particular concern in specific workplaces such as crystalline silica or metals. We offer a two week turn around on samples as our standard service but can provide a faster turn around on request. If required, IOM occupational hygienists can undertake sampling in your workplace and advise on measures to reduce exposure.
