HSE introduces a new limit on the concentration of crystalline silica in air

From 1 October 2006, an updated workplace exposure limit (WEL) for respirable crystalline silica came into force. The new WEL is 0.1 milligrams per cubic metre of air averaged over an eight-hour period (i.e. 0.1 mg.m-3). HSE have simultaneously published a series of Silica Essentials sheets that outline the approaches that can be adopted to control exposure. Employers have to follow the principles of good practice as outlined in the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. There are 69 sheets available covering the following areas of work:

  • Brick and tile making
  • Construction: Silica
  • Ceramics: Silica
  • Foundries: Silica
  • Manufacturing: Silica
  • Quarries: Silica
  • Slate works: Silica
  • Stonemasons: Silica

  • You can download any of these sheets from... http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/guidance

IOM can provide advice and assistance on any aspect of compliance with the new WEL. For further information contact any of our occupational hygiene contacts (http://www.iom-world.org/services/hygiene.php).
