Appointment of new Chief Executive Officer

The Institute of Occupational Medicine has appointed Dr Philip Woodhead as its new Chief Executive.

From 1 February Dr Woodhead will take up his post formerly held by Dr Colin A. Soutar who is retiring after 15 years and will become an honorary Vice President at IOM.

Professor Russel Griggs, chairman, IOM, said: "I am delighted to announce our new appointments. Philip's previous experience and qualities in scientific management and business development, coupled with his leadership skills made him the perfect candidate for the new CEO. As part of the change, current director, Fintan Hurley, has been promoted to Scientific Director, following almost 30 years with us, during which time he has gained an international reputation for his work in outdoor pollution and occupational epidemiology.

"Both Philip and Fintan will provide a massive boost to the company and their partnership will ensure the continued success of IOM as a world renowned independent UK centre for multidisciplinary research, consultancy and training in occupational and environmental health, hygiene and safety."

Philip Woodhead (50) joins IOM from the pharmaceutical services company Quintiles Limited, Edinburgh, where he was business unit head for 10 years. Philip began his highly successful career as a research scientist in pharmaceutical development and progressed into senior management roles with Glaxo, Syntex and Quintiles.

Philip is also an Honorary Professor at the School of Pharmacy, Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

Dr Colin Soutar was involved in the formation of the independent Institute of Occupational Medicine in 1990. With Dr Soutar as CEO and scientific leader, the IOM team have raised our reputation and credibility in the market place, overseen major business expansions and developed the IOM's new £3.5m purpose built HQ at Riccarton, all of which ensured IOM's position as an industry leader.

Professor Griggs added: "Dr Soutar has demonstrated true loyalty and leadership qualities during his time at the IOM and must take credit for the success of the institute as it stands today. We are delighted that he will become an honorary Vice President and continue to play a significant role in the future of IOM."
