REACH Ready

On 1 June this year, the new EU chemicals regulation (REACH) came into operation and there are now less than 6 months remaining to pre-register. ECHA have announced that by 13 June 2008, 1427 companies had signed up in REACH-IT and created 7360 pre-registrations.

This update from IOM highlights the key aspects of Pre-registration which you may find valuable.

Pre-registration

Chemical substances currently being manufactured in, or imported into, the EU are now under obligation to be registered with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

As part of a phased registration opportunity, substances can be pre-registered with the Agency from the 1 June until 1 December 2008. Pre-registration is simple and free to carry out via the REACH-IT web application [https://reach-it.echa.europa.eu/reach/public/welcome.faces] accessible from the ECHA website. Pre-registration brings the benefit of extended registration deadlines and makes the most of sharing costs and data.

Missing the opportunity to pre-register will mean that substances will have to be registered immediately from the 1 December 2008 in order to continue to market and use them legally.
