Health effects associated with bioaerosols from waste handling processes

High levels of workplace exposure to bioaerosol in the waste industry are associated with adverse effects on respiratory health but little is known about the impacts of bioaerosol emissions from waste handling processes on health in local communities. In order to inform current and future regulation of emissions of fungal spores and other bioaerosol components from composting and other waste handling processes, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) commissioned the IOM to undertake a review of the available exposure response information. Both our full report and a shorter summary are now available on the Defra website here.
