IOM scientist attends the UK National Smoking Cessation Conference
Dr Araceli Sánchez Jiménez, a research scientist within the Exposure Assessment section at IOM, attended the UK National Smoking Cessation Conference (UKSCC) in June. She presented the results of two studies from IOM's research on tobacco smoke exposure. The first examined the exposure of children to second hand smoke while travelling in cars. The second presentation was about the characterization of mainstream components in shisha smoke and the health risks posed for mothers and their unborn children.
The Conference included a number of oral presentations, poster sessions, exhibitors and a film screening. The themes covered different disciplines including smoking cessation intervention studies, medication compliance and mental health issues associated with smoking cessation. The two talks delivered by Dr. Sánchez Jiménez represented a novel contribution to a Conference that was mostly focused on medical and psychological interventions. Relatively little is known about the health hazard of smoking shisha and about levels of exposure to second hand smoke in vehicles and so IOM's work has contributed to the debate about the potential risks from these activities.
This Conference offered a good opportunity to showcase IOM's extensive research on characterising exposure to tobacco smoke.
Next year the Conference will be held in London. See... http://www.uknscc.org
