IOM successfully delivers second training course to Turkey's ISGUM regional staff

IOM recently hosted a second group of seven members from the ISGLABTEK Internships for Technical Training programme which is part of the Technical Assistance for Development of Regional Laboratories of Occupational Health and Safety Centre (ISGUM) in Ankara, Turkey.

The five day course was held from 28th November to 2nd December 2011 and covered a broad spectrum of topics from within the Occupational Hygiene and Analytical Laboratory disciplines.

The aim of the course was to increase the delegates understanding of how various aspects of occupational hygiene sample analysis is carried out within the UK. The visit provided an overview of the sampling methods and analytical techniques relevant to assessment of exposure of a variety of hazardous substances.

The participants received a good overview of the practices and methods applied and had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with some of the techniques.

The main topic areas which IOM provides through our Health and Safety Services Section and our analytical laboratory services included in the course were:

  • COSHH assessments;
  • Chemical risk assessments;
  • Sample collection;
  • Analytical methods;
  • Sample analysis.
Specific analytical techniques demonstrated included analysis of:
  • Crystalline silica;
  • Quartz analysis;
  • Mineral identification;
  • Glutaraldehyde and formaldehyde;
  • Toluene and xylene.

Very positive feedback was received from all the participants and it is anticipated that further collaborations on training will be scheduled in the future.

Commenting on the course, Sheila Groat, IOM's Head of Health and Safety Services, observed that "It was good to see the similarities in approach to occupational hygiene within the workplace".
