Anglo-French Nanotechnology EHS research collaborations for mutual benefit

Existing relations strengthened and new partnerships formed in high profile event organised by IOM & CEA at the British Embassy, Paris.

On the 10th and 11th March, the IOM & CEA (Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique, France), were pleased to organise a workshop to discuss health and safety issues of nanomaterials. Hosted by the British Embassy, Paris and the French Embassy London, the two-day meeting gathered representatives from government, industry, industry associations, academia and funding bodies to discuss progress to date within each country, and to explore common interests and potential collaborations between the two.

The British Delegation was led by IOM’s Director of Strategic Consulting Dr Rob Aitken in collaboration with Dr Lang Tran, IOM’s Principal Toxicologist and assisted by Miss Bryony Ross, Editor of the IOM-based SAFENANO Initiative. The French Delegation was led by Dr Daniel Bloch of the Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique, France.

Over the packed two day meeting, assembled experts from government, academia, industry and industry associations presented the state of the art in nanotechnology EHS issues within each country, and engaged in lively discussion and debate. Based upon this, proposals for future collaborative efforts and exchanges of information were put forward, and plans for realising these were constructed. It is anticipated that the event will be followed by a series of topic-focussed workshops throughout the year, and will culminate in a follow-up event to be held at the French Embassy, Paris in late 2010/early 2011.
