The IOM Service
The IOM has 40 years of experience in the area of workplace and environmental hazards, and their effects on human health. We have particular expertise in assessing exposure to hazardous agents such as chemicals, asbestos and other fibres, dusts, fumes, and heat stress, plus the ergonomic aspects of tasks and workplaces. We are able to conduct retrospective assessments of risk, and interpret our findings in the light of contemporaneous knowledge. Our expertise in epidemiology, statistics and risk assessment enables us to distinguish cause and effect from chance occurrences.
The IOM Difference
From our origins in the coal industry, through to the present day, the IOM has specialised in the study of exposure of people to workplace hazards, and the consequential health effects. Our work has expanded into many industries, including chemicals, mineral fibres, mining, metals, transport, agriculture and construction, to name just a few. It has also extended into exposure to environmental hazards, and their effects on public health. Our research work has in many cases influenced legislation and has led to the setting of workplace standards in industry. Many of our senior scientists have international reputations in their own specialist fields, and also have the breadth of cross-disciplinary knowledge necessary to understand the complex issues raised by workplace and environmental exposures. Add to this the communication skills necessary to convey complex and emotive scientific issues to different stakeholder groups and you have access to a pool of highly qualified expert witnesses.
