The IOM is a major independent centre of scientific excellence in the fields of occupational and environmental health, hygiene and safety. We were founded as a charity in 1969 by the UK coal industry in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh and became fully independent in 1990. Our mission is to benefit those at work and in the community by providing quality research, consultancy and training in health, hygiene and safety and by maintaining our independent, impartial position as an international centre of excellence.

The IOM has more than seventy scientific and technical staff based in Edinburgh, Chesterfield, Stafford and London. Our Chief Executive is Dr Philip Woodhead.

Our work

IOM scientists and technicians are expert in a wide range of disciplines. We provide research, reviews and risk assessments to assist clients in the formulation and implementation of policy and development of good practice.

Our principal research areas are exposure assessment, epidemiology, mechanisms of disease, ergonomics and behavioural and social sciences with a strong focus on multi-disciplinary approaches to problem solving. In these areas we undertake basic and applied scientific research projects around occupational ill-health issues.

Our consultancies are undertaken by our wholly owned subsidiary, IOM Consulting Ltd. We provide top quality consultancy and training in occupational hygiene, asbestos management and surveillance, occupational health (including health screening), ergonomics (including manual handling and work stress), occupational psychology, chemical analysis and certification testing for personal protective equipment (PPE).

All our work is supported by a comprehensive library, IT services and well equipped laboratories.

Our Clients

Our research in these areas is conducted for a wide range of clients in the EU, UK and the US including Government departments, international agencies, industry associations, local authorities and industrial and commercial companies. The IOM is a World Heath Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre and is an approved institute of the University of Edinburgh, with collaborative links with other universities, NIOSH, IARC, INRS and many other institutes in the UK and abroad.

Our consultancy services are provided all across the UK and Internationally for government departments, local authorities and a wide range of industrial, commercial and service organisations.
