Environment and Health
IOM's work was originally wholly concerned with issues of workplace exposures and health. However, many hazards of the workplace occur in the wider environment also and similar skills are needed to measure and study them. Over the past 20 years the IOM has extended its expertise and interests to include health and wellbeing effects of the wider physical and social environments as well as the workplace; and now has a high international reputation for the quality of its environment and health work, especially in Health Impact Assessment.
IOM Environment and Health Services
Our environment and health work is local, UK-wide and international in scope – from local developments to the assessment of EU policies. It overlaps and works closely with other IOM themes and interests: workplace exposures, REACH, asbestos, nano-materials. It includes consulting work, carried out through IOM's Centre for Health Impact Assessment, and research into methods of Environmental Health Impact Assessment; primary research into environmental exposures and their relationships with health; and a wide range of services in environmental exposure and risk assessment. We deal with traditional pollutants, such as air pollution (outdoors and indoors), noise, pesticides and radiation; and with wider public health issues of inequalities and environmental justice. For this we have a well-established inter-disciplinary team of exposure scientists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, statisticians and public health specialists, experienced in working together and with other organisations, for a wide range of public and private sector clients.
