New review published, on the risks associated with engineered nanomaterials
This review, published by a consortium led by scientists at Edinburgh Napier University and the IOM, addresses the health and environmental safety issues associated with engineered nanomaterials such as fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, metals and metal oxides. The review considers sources, pathways of exposure, and the potential health and environmental consequences of exposure.

IOM receives Distinguished Service Award from Safety Groups UK
Safety Groups UK held their annual awards luncheon at the House of Lords on 25th January. The IOM was presented with a special award for distinguished service by the President of Safety Groups UK, Lord Brougham & Vaux, in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the understanding and prevention of work-related ill-health.

House of Lords report criticises industry over use of nanotechnology in food
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee recently published a report on the use of nanotechnology and nanomaterials in the food industry. The report draws extensively on the 'EMERGNANO' review, produced in 2009 by IOM scientists and collaborators, and.calls for greater transparency on the part of the food industry in relation to its research into potential uses of these materials in food and food packaging.

IOM Chairman appointed to Board of Scottish Enterprise
Jim Mather, Scottish Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism, recently announced the appointment of two new board members at Scottish Enterprise, one of whom, Professor Russel Griggs OBE, is the Chair of IOM's Board of Governors.

Nanotoxicology 2010 Conference
Nanotoxicology 2010 is taking place in Edinburgh on 2nd-4th June, and is being organised by scientists from the IOM, Napier University and the University of Edinburgh. The conference will feature sessions on different categories of nanomaterials, and several keynote speakers of international standing have been confirmed.

Featured Service: Keeping electroplating workers healthy
Workers in the electroplating industry can potentially be exposed to a number of harmful chemical agents, and these can be the cause of some serious illnesses. The IOM can carry out workplace monitoring, supported by laboratory analysis, to ensure that workplace exposures are controlled within limits set by the HSE.
